Tourette syndrome is a disorder that involves involuntary repetitive movements or unwanted sounds (tics) that can’t be easily controlled. For instance, you might repeatedly blink your eyes, shrug your shoulders, or blurt out unusual sounds or offensive words.
This is more common in male children of age between 2 and 15. There are many versions of his disorder. As a child, whenever I was excited to share something, my mind worked faster than my motor body could convey. I often started a word and this word was repeated as my mind was already finishing the sentence unable to express it.
I would start with excitement saying, father, I was was was was was… then I stopped saying no. Calmed down and in a slower, controllable fashion I would convey the message. My father was joking with me by calling me No.
In primary school when I was about 11 years old, my friend had Tourette syndrome. He often twitched one eye, spitting, and twitching his head to one side, especially when nervous about something. As he grew older, he was able not to show it as much.
Before the onset of motor or vocal tics, people experience a premonitory urge such as an itch, a tingle, or tension. Expression of the tic brings relief. Some people can control Tourette syndrome and temporarily stop or hold back a tic.
